![]() MSCI LAUNCHES COMMSTELLATION.COM WEBSITE Website to Focus on MSCI’s Communication Constellation COMMStellation™ “COMMStellationTM is a combination of COMMunication and conSTELLATION,” explains David R. Cooper, President and CEO, MSCI. “MSCI’s COMMStellationTM is a polar low earth orbit communications constellation comprised of 78 Microsatellites and 20 ground stations. With an estimated 5 billion global cell phone subscribers by end 2010, the subsequent explosion of data is putting unheard of pressure on backhaul; the connection between cell towers and a major network such as the Internet. It is not economically feasible to meet this demand with fibre optics for much of the planet’s population. COMMStellationTM, however, will provide backhaul via satellite, providing much needed capacity and a high speed connection to remote regions that currently don’t have access to the Internet. COMMStellationTM will have 100% global coverage and provide up to 15 times more speed and 10 times the system capacity of anything currently available or announced for backhaul in space.” COMMStellation.com focuses on a number of areas including a description of the constellation, the market need, facts and figures, Q&A and a comparison of COMMStellationTM vs. other space constellations. Check back often for regular updates on the progress of the COMMStellation initiative, news and information about new partners. For more information, or if you are interested in joining the COMMStellationTM team, MSCI is looking for mobile operators at or nearing capacity, service providers who want to improve service to their customers, technology partners who can bring complementary technologies to the COMMStellationTM initiative, and governments that want to improve the lives of their citizens.
